♥ Never Ending Story 2009 ♥

Note on soap magazine publication dates and content of articles/interviews regarding multiple soap stars: Many of the monthly or every other month (and sometimes quarterly) magazines back in the 1980's would be on the newsstands a long time before the date on the actual magazine. We've noticed, for instance, that DAYTIME TV magazine did an interview with Drake in late 1986 about his upcoming wedding, which was scheduled for December 1986, yet the interview didn't appear until the July 1987 issue several months later. Therefore, it might be a bit confusing to read about his "upcoming" wedding in an interview dated July 1987 when you happen to know he was married in December 1986. We've tried to date the articles to match the date on the magazine, regardless of when the events talked about took place. Hopefully it will make sense as you go along!

We've also edited some of the articles/interviews to just include John's storyline, since this is a Drake/John website. We've left out comments and sections about other actors or storylines unless they're involved with John's storyline. This too should be very apparent and clear when we've done that so it makes sense and you don't have to skim through a long article to find the "John parts."

A Closer Look: Brady

Brady and Marlena confront Charlotte about her dubious dealings with John this week, leading to a showdown and the long-awaited return of John's memories. Eric Martsolf (Brady) reflects on the moment fans have been waiting for.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Marlena and Brady watch video of John's hypnotherapy session and realize Charlotte lied about John remembering his past. What's their reaction?

Eric Martsolf: They're completely stunned. The fact that Charlotte would do something as devious as this is out of left field.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Who's angrier, Brady or Marlena?

Eric Martsolf: Marlena is more methodical in her approach - as every good psychiatrist is. Brady is pissed! He's running on adrenaline. He wants to grab Charlotte by the throat and take her to the floor. Brady has been away from his father for years, and since he's come home he still feels away from him. He hasn't gotten his dad back. Charlotte has been precluding him from having a relationship with John. Brady wants to lash out at her.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Does Marlena counsel Brady through this?

Eric Martsolf: Yes. Marlena persuades Brady to calm down. She wants to do some investigative research into what's going on before accusations start flying.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Brady later tells John what he's learned. What happens?

Eric Martsolf: Brady informs his father he's been lied to by Charlotte. He's excited to tell John this. Unfortunately, John's reaction to Brady is very much like Brady's reaction to Charlotte. He's pissed off. He feels Brady is infiltrating his world, not minding his own business, and doesn't know what he's talking about. Then Brady shows John footage of his session. When John sees that, bells start ringing in his head. The facts are right there in front of his face and pretty undeniable. John knows he's got to get to the bottom of this.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: John calls Charlotte just as she's about to inject Marlena with a lethal toxin, rushes to the scene, and ends up injected with the toxin himself. What transpires next?

Eric Martsolf: Brady shows up with Bo and Hope and, much to his horror, finds Marlena trying to resuscitate his father. Before he can get a word in, Marlena's telling him to retrieve syringes out of her bag. It's pandemonium. They're trying to save John.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Miraculously, John comes to and is rushed to the hospital, where Marlena keeps vigil by his bedside. When John awakens, he remembers everything. What can you share about Brady's first moments with his dad?

Eric Martsolf: There are no words. The most important thing is the way John looks at Brady. Brady realizes it's not that robotic way he looked at him before. Brady sees in John's eyes that his dad is back. He and John both start tearing up.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Marlena and Brady are thrilled, until Kayla announces John may remain paralyzed from the neck down. Marlena takes charge and opts to take John to Europe for treatment. What are Brady's thoughts on her decision?

Eric Martsolf: Brady just got a chance to get started with John; he just got his dad back when he has to go. It's kind of a premature ending.

SOAP OPERA WEEKLY: Yet Brady realizes it's what must be and supports John and Marlena. Then they exchange "I do's" in a ceremony at the hospital. What are those scenes like?

Eric Martsolf: Those final moments are all John and Marlena. They own them, although Brady, Kayla and Roman are all present. John and Marlena say everything they've wanted to say to each other for months and let their hearts liquefy all over the set. Brady's happy to see them reunited and happy to have his father back. He hopes to have more moments with John in the future. Whether that happens or not is a mystery, but the door remains open.

I Do, I Did, I Do, Again!

John and Marlena's impromptu wedding marks the fourth time the Salem supercouple have exchanged vows. Here's the skinny on their previous nuptials.

August 22, 1986:

Marlena and John, who was then believed to be Roman, were married at Saint Luke's. The bride wore a stunning gown and unique Statue of Liberty-like headpiece, designed by Calliope. Marilyn McCoo, who played Marlena's old pal Tamara, sang "Up Where We Belong" to the happy couple.

July 6, 1999:

Wedding Number Two took place at the Penthouse Grill. Eric and Sami served as best man and maid of honor. The newlyweds took off on a romantic honeymoon to Hawaii. Sadly, it didn't end well: Hope/Gina drugged and kidnapped John, taking him to a submarine.

March 27, 2002:

Marlena and John renewed their vows at a wedding chapel in Las Vegas. They both wore medieval costumes and reaffirmed their love for one another. John re-created their 1999 wedding night on his private plane, and the pair shared an afternoon of lovemaking.

Editor's Opinion:

Poor John and Marlena fans really were slapped in the face when it came to their favorite supercouple's exit. Yes, John got his memory back and the pair reunited, but John left paralyzed, which doesn't exactly conjure up any happily-ever-after dreams. As far as the pair's possible return to the canvas one day, John's return to his old self is probably the kiss of death for Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall. Where's the intrigue? The drama? There isn't any. Plotwise, it would have been a better idea to have RoboJohn split town while still grappling with who he is and searching for answers about his past. Marlena could have ultimately taken off after him when he phoned, in dire need of help. Now, that would have been interesting.
